Direct Anterior Approach. Is it the New Gold Standard?

Craig Waller
Hip replacement by the direct anterior approach is technically challenging with an estimated learning curve of at least 40 cases. However with experience this procedure can be almost as stress free and time-efficient as standard posterior approach hip replacement. One advantage is the ability to easily obtain an intra-operative X-Ray on the table and make adjustments if required. Whilst DAA surgeons claim less pain and a faster recovery with this approach, most published studies show little difference at 6 months, although the dislocation risk is clearly lower with the direct anterior approach. Is DAA the new gold standard? Possible, but not proven.
