Dislocation Experience with 500 Dual Mobility Cups

Thorsten Gehrke, MD
Despite the excellent results following THA, the increasing number of revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) will be a serious problem in the near future. Especially, recurrent dislocations are associated with a high risk of persistent instability, which can lead to patient morbidity. Instability after primary and revision THA can occur in 7% and 25 %, respectively. Since the introduction of the dual mobility or tripolar cups, a different concept in the treatment of recurrent dislocation has been available. The main goal of this method was to increase the range of motion and to decrease the dislocation risk.

From January 2009 to December 2013, 500 primary and/or revision total hip arthroplasties were performed using a dual mobility cup (Dual Mobility, BiometOrthopedics Inc., Warsaw, IN, USA) atourinstitution. We here present our experience and clinical results, with special focus on the dislocation rate, of dual mobility cups in primary and revision THA.
