APAS Travelling Fellowship Report 2022

We were pleasantly surprised when the results of Fellowship revealed by APAS Board that I, Dr. Lokesh Kumar Yogi along with my colleague Dr. Narendra Singh Kushwaha along were selected for this prestigious fellowship.

It has been a great privilege to be as Fellow of APAS 2022. We are grateful to APAS Board for selecting us for this fellowship which allowed us to excel and expand our knowledge in the field of Arthroplasty

The duration of the fellowship was 4 weeks: 1 week in India, 1 week in Malaysia, 1 week in Australia and 1 week in Indonesia. It was to start on 25th July 2022 till 22th August 2022. It was a sponsored fellowship with a stipend and roundtrip airfare. We are beholden Prof. Dr. Nicolaas Budhiparama, Prof. Dr. Parag Sancheti and Prof. Dr. Rami Sorial for granting us this prestigious fellowship. We take this opportunity to share our incredible fellowship experience with you all.

India, Chennai
22 – 28 July 2022

Our Fellowship started at Chennai, where we visited Asian Joint Reconstruction Institute (AJRI) at SRM Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS). We assisted with mentors Dr. Vijay Bose, and Dr. Ashok in Conventional TKRs, Navigated TKRs, Primary and Revision THRs.

29 – 31 July 2022

In Pune, we first visited Sancheti Hospital and Meeting with Dr. Parag Sancheti and then we attended Pune Knee Course at Hotel JW Marriot, it was great opportunity for us that given by Dr. Parag sir, here we were exposed to a wide variety of cases in Knee Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy with national and international orthopaedic surgeons. Then we flew to Malaysia.

1 – 7 August 2022

In Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to be greeted by Prof. David Choon himself at Quill orthopaedic clinic and we observed total knees and hips surgeries and learned many practical tips from him. Socially, he had organised a visit for us to the Batu caves/temple followed by a get-together at his residence and went for dinner. He had also organised a visit for us to the Malacca, historial place in Malaysia and we had meeting with Dr. Chan Chee Ken at Mahkota Medical Centre and had scientific discussion on arthroplasty and dinner together. Then we flew to Australia.

Australia, Sydney
18 – 14 August 2022

We were provided with a detailed schedule for the upcoming week organised by Prof. Dr. Rami Sorial. We visited and worked with Dr. Rami Sorial (Nepean Private and Public Hospitals-NPH, Macquarie University Hospital-MUH), Dr. Yaseer Khatib (NPH), Dr. Sanjeev Gupta (St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney), Dr. James Sullivan (Norwest Private Hospital) and Dr. Dao (Nepean Public Hospitals). We were exposed to a wide variety of cases in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty with something different/unique to learn from every surgeon. With surgeons, we assisted in THRs (posterior and direct anterior approaches, UKR, Robotic TKRs (various type of robot), PSI-TKRs and THRs. Dr. Rami Sorial had organised for us the Sydney city tour followed by a get-together at beach side restaurant for dinner. Excellent socialisation and hospitality were extended. Then we flew to Jakarta.

Indonesia, Jakarta
15 – 21 August 2022

We visited in Jakarta (Indonesia) to Prof. Dr. Nicolaas Budhiparama at Medistra Hospital, He arranged our visitations to three different cities in Indonesia (Jakarta, solo and Surabaya) assisting different surgeons. We got introduced to Dr. Kiki, Dr. Franky at Jakarta and We actively participated in various Hip and Knee surgeries and had clinical meetings supervised by Prof. Dr. Nicolaas Budhiparama, where we presented our scientific research work. Prof. Dr. Nicolaas arranged a great dinner with his family and fellows.

Indonesia – Solo, Surabaya

Then we travelled to solo and assisted with Dr. Asep in Knee Surgery at Dr. R. Soeharso Hospital. Following two days stay at Solo, we flew to Surabaya to visit Dr. Soemoto Hospital. Dr. Dwikora, Dr. Kukuh and Dr. Chilmi showed us the facility, university, orthopaedic department, cadaveric skills lab, bone/tissue banking lab. We assisted in a difficult THR. The Surabaya ortho team had organized an awesome bromo volcano mountain trip. Excellent socialisation and hospitality were extended in Indonesia overall by all the mentors involved. Then we flew to Bali to attend APAS.
